Further background information

What is PharMetrX?

PharMetrX is a joint, structured research training program of Freie Universität Berlin (Clinical Pharmacy) and the University of Potsdam (Mathematics & Systems Biology) with internationally high reputation.

What are research projects within PharMetrX?
In PharMetrX research projects, we use clinical, experimental and literature data to quantitatively investigate relationships between administered dosing regimens, occurring drug concentration-time profiles (in particular at the site of action), evoked effects and resulting therapy outcomes. In doing so, we include knowledge about mechanisms of drug effects (desired, undesired) in biological networks and about the time course of disease in the body. Such pharmacometric models allow us to quantitively understand based on the underlying mechanisms the interplay between the triad "drug –patient – disease" and thus to ultimately predict the occurrence of desired and undesired effects, the course of disease and the influence of patient factors.

What is the benefit and impact of pharmacometrics/PharMetrX?
As a result, pharmacometrics is not only becoming increasingly important in decision-making processes in all phases of drug research & development ("Model-informed Drug Discovery and Development (MID3)"); it also represents a decisive step towards personalised drug therapy („Model-informed Precision Dosing“(MIPD)).

PharMetrX thus contributes to the development of rational therapy recommendations to improve the risk-benefit ratio of drug treatments in individual patients or subgroups, thereby increasing both therapy safety and efficiency.

And after your PhD studies? Excellent perspectives!

Pharmacometrics is an exciting area with excellent professional development opportunities in this field after your PhD studies: e.g. at university, in large and small research-driven pharmaceutical companies, in non-university research institutes/consultant institutes, hospitals, regulatory authorities, etc.
