Investigating molecular mechanisms of synaptic vesicle fusion and associated neurological diseases

Researcher
PhD Student
In her PhD research, Helena investigates the molecular mechanisms of synaptic vesicle fusion and associated neurological diseases. Under the framework of the Einstein visiting fellowship (see link below), her work focuses on protein purification and complexation for cryo-EM and cross-linking mass spectrometry aiming to capture these highly transient protein-protein interactions and furthering our understanding of neurological pathologies and disorders.
Helena holds a bachelor’s degree in brewing technology and a master’s degree in biotechnology from the Technische Universität Berlin where she developed her interest in protein biochemistry during her studies and practical year at the Rappsilber group. She joined the Freund Lab as PhD student in May 2025.
