Sugar-PEGylated polymers for drug delivery applications

S. Bhatia, K. Bohra, M. Kumar, M. Chandrakant, A. K. Prasad – 2012

The application of drug carriers for the delivery of drugs with higher biocompatibility, sustained release profile, and target specificity is a big challenge in ongoing research. Sugar-PEGylated polymers have attracted great attention in the last few years for biomedical applications as drug carriers. This is due to the higher biocompatibility of PEG unit, and target specific behavior of sugar moieties. However, Sugar-PEGylated polymeric architectures have not been much explored for the controlled drug delivery applications. This review deals with the discussion of various polymeric systems bearing both sugar and PEG units, prepared for target specific drug delivery applications. Some pH responsive polymeric systems aimed for controlled drug delivery applications have also been discussed.
