Dr. Benno Kuropka
Head of the Core Facility for Biological Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics

Biochemistry
Staff Scientist - Mass Spectrometry
Protein Biochemistry
As part of the BioSupraMol Core Facility, I am responsible for the operation and maintenance of two high-resolution mass spectrometry instruments (MALDI-TOF and LC-ESI-MS). I serve as a primary contact for scientists and students planning proteomics projects and provide training on instrument use. My role also includes method development, coordinating service requests, and contributing to teaching activities.
Benno Kuropka studied Biochemistry at the Freie Universität Berlin, where he developed an early interest in MS–based protein analysis. He pursued this further in his diploma thesis on peptide dissociation techniques. He completed his PhD with Dr. Eberhard Krause (FMP Berlin) and Prof. Dr. Christian Freund (FU Berlin), focusing on protein–protein interactions using quantitative proteomics. During his postdoctoral work in at Bayer Pharma AG, he developed methods for native MS of intact protein assemblies and protein–ligand complexes.
Benno joined the Freund group in 2016 to continue his research in MS-based proteomics, with a focus on quantitative proteomics, PTM analysis, and intact-protein mass analysis.
