Examinations
Here you can find the most important information regarding the examinations.
The module examination determines the grade for this module.
The exam can be graded in two ways:
- In differentiated grading, a grade is awarded, e.g. 1.3 or 3.0. The worst grade you can pass with is a 4.0. If you fail the examination, a 5.0 is awarded.
- In the non-differentiated assessment, a distinction is only made between "pass" and "fail".
No, the exam itself is not enough.
To sucessfully complete a module and receive the respective credit points, you also need to have confirmation of the active and regular participation. The basis for confirmation of participation is dependent on the module and lecturer.
Only if you have fulfilled all three criteria, you completed the module.
The overall grade for the degree program is calculated proportionally from the grades of all modules.
Each module grade is multiplied by the corresponding number of credit points. The sum of these is divided by the sum of all credit points from graded modules.
Modules that are non-differentiated graded are not included in the overall grade.
The study program defines the possible forms of examination. In many cases, the examination is a standard written exam. Sometimes, oral exams or other forms of examination substitutes, e.g. a presentation, are possible.
If various options are possible, the lecturer may decide which one to use. (Ideally, they discuss that with students.)
In the chemistry programs at FU, it is usually not necessary to sign up for an examination.
As soon as you are enrolled correctly for a course in Campus Management, you are automatically signed up for the examination. This happens automatically but is non-binding. If you wish to not participate in the examination, then you don't have to.
Note: Sometimes lecturers ask to announce participation in written exams in advance, for example via email, to reduce paper waste. Keep your eyes open for such announcements!Other programs may have different rules. Please inform yourself in advance.
For every module, two exams are offered per semester. As long as you participated in the course for the first time and took the first exam, you have the opportunity to improve your grade in the second exam.
That also applies, if you already passed the first exam. It is not possible to worsen your grade, the better grade always counts. You need to have participated in the first exam. This is also explained on the examination board's website (in German).
In addition, there shall be an exam review for every exam. It is definitely worth going there. It is always possible that the lecturers have overlooked points or that you should have received more points at somewhere.
In the modules of the Master's program in chemistry, you may take the module examination a maximum of four times.
If you do not pass on the fourth attempt, you have definitively failed the module. Due to the large number of elective courses, this is usually not that big of a problem, since you simply can take a different course.
But: It is very unlikely that it will ever come to this at all :-)
