Chemist Prof. Dr. Beate Koksch honored with ACS Award

Chemist Prof. Dr. Beate Koksch of Freie Universität Berlin has received the 2021 ACS Award for Creative Work in Fluorine Chemistry from the American Chemical Society (ACS). The scientist was honored for outstanding contributions, especially for extraordinary originality and creativity in applying fluorine chemistry to protein engineering, at the interface of chemistry and biology, according to the jury's statement.

Beate Koksch has actively researched the influence of fluorine modifications on the properties of amino acids, peptides and proteins at Freie Universität since 2004. She is the head of a sub-project of the Collaborative Research Center 1349 “Control of peptide-protein interactions and protein folding through fluorine-specific interactions”. She also leads the “Organic Chemistry and Natural Product Chemistry” working group in the Department of Biology, Chemistry, and Pharmacy at Freie Universität.

The ACS Award was sponsored by Arkema, a company that manufactures petrochemical products.

Chemikerin Prof. Dr. Beate Koksch mit dem ACS Award geehrt

Die Chemikerin Prof. Dr. Beate Koksch von der Freien Universität Berlin ist mit dem 2021 ACS Award for Creative Work in Fluorine Chemistry der American Chemistry Society (ACS) ausgezeichnet worden. Geehrt wurde die Wissenschaftlerin für herausragende Beiträge mit außergewöhnlicher Originalität und Kreativität zur Fluorchemie im Proteinengineering an der Schnittstelle von Chemie und Biologie, hieß es in der Begründung der Jury.

Beate Koksch forscht seit 2004 zum Einfluss von Fluormodifizierungen auf die Eigenschaften von Aminosäuren, Peptiden und Proteinen an der Freien Universität. Sie ist Leiterin eines Teilprojekts des Sonderforschungsbereichs 1349 „Steuerung von Peptid-Protein-Wechselwirkungen und Proteinfaltung durch Fluor-Spezifische Wechselwirkungen“. Zudem leitet sie die Arbeitsgruppe „Organische Chemie und Naturstoffchemie“ am Fachbereich Biologie, Chemie, Pharmazie der Freien Universität.

Der ACS Award wurde gefördert von dem Unternehmen Arkema, das in der Herstellung petrochemischer Produkte tätig ist.
