Diversity of floral nectary secretions and structure, and implications for their evolution in Anacardiaceae

News vom 14.05.2018

In this paper, we compared the inter- and intraspecific diversity of nectary secretions and structure in 13 members of Anacardiaceae to test their usefulness for the systematics of the family and their potential functional link. We found that while the composition of secretions does not differ significantly in functionally male and female flowers of a species, it can vary more between closely related species than between species that belong to different subfamilies. We also found no correlation between nectar composition and nectary structure.
