The synthesis of different triethylmethylammonium fluoridobromates is described. Solutions of the ammonium bromide in acetonitrile, propionitrile or bromine are exposed to dilute elemental fluorine to yield solutions containing [BrF4]– or [BrF2]– depending on the amount of fluorine added. If bromine is used as a solvent [Br2F7]– can be obtained. The [BrF4]– containing solution is used for the transformation Ar2S2 to ArSF5 and dissolution of Ag.
