Excursions

On Wednesday (24 Sep 2025) afternoon, conference attendees can explore Berlin through various suggested tours. Tours start after lunch from the venue and return by 6 pm to the venue. 

Canoeing on Wannsee

The weather forecast predicts strong winds on Wednesday afternoon, making canoeing unsafe for inexperienced paddlers. For safety reasons, we unfortunately have to cancel the canoe trip. We invite you to stop by the info desk, where you can pick up tickets for another excursion.

Botanical Garden

Discover the diversity of the plant kingdom during a guided tour through Berlin's Botanical Garden (on-site payment: 5 EUR).

    Schedule:

    • Guided tours at the Botanical Garden start at 15:00, duration about 90 minutes.
    • Meeting point A: main entrance of the conference site (Arnimallee 22) at 14:20
    • Meeting point B: Botanical Garden main entrance, Königin-Luise-Str. 4-6, at 14:40
    • Walking time from A to B is about 10–15 minutes. You can either join the group at A and walk together or go directly to B.
    • Being at B by 14:40 gives enough time to buy an individual ticket for the Botanic Garden before the tours start. After the tour you are free to explore the Botanic Garden on your own.

Dahlem Historical Tour

Join a guided walking tour through Scientific Landmarks in Berlin-Dahlem, from Einstein’s residence to Meitner and Hahn’s workplace and Haber's institute (on-site payment: 0 EUR).

    On Wednesday, September 24, we are offering a historical guided tour of parts of the FU campus and the Max Planck Society grounds. We will meet at 2:30 PM in front of the Hahn Meitner Building (Thielallee 63, 14195 Berlin).

    If you do not want to go by your own to the Hahn Meitner Building, you can gather at 2:00 at the back entrance of Arnimallee 22, and you will guided to the Hahn Meitner Building (15-20 min walk).

    The tour will begin with a brief introduction by Dr. Jens Peter Fürste, who invented the tour and collected all necessary information, inside the building. Afterwards, we will divide into smaller groups to explore the historical sites on the campus.

    The tour takes place outdoors and will last approximately 90 to 120 minutes, covering a distance of about 1–2 kilometers on foot. All guides will conduct their tours in English.

Hike around Grunewald Tower

Join a 5-8 km hike around the Grunewald Tower (on-site payment: 0 EUR).

    Schedule: Grunewald Tower Hike

    We will meet at Arnimallee 22, Dahlem (FU Berlin), front entrance at 13:20 — please be on time! From there, we will walk together (~20 minutes) to the S-Bahn station Botanischer Garten. We will then continue by public transport to the starting point of the hike at the Grunewald Tower:

    • 13:56 – 14:09: S-Bahn (S1) to Nikolassee
    • 14:09 – 14:19: Walk (~5 min) to bus stop Wannseebadweg
    • 14:19 – 14:31: Bus 218 to Grunewaldturm (note: departs only once per hour!)

    From Grunewald Tower, we will begin our hike along the Havelhöhenweg (~8.3 km, approx. 2–3 hours walking time), leading us back to the S-Bahn station Nikolassee. The return trip will take us back to FU Berlin:

    • 17:30 – 17:45: S-Bahn to Botanischer Garten
    • 17:45 – 18:00: Walk (~15 min) back to FU Berlin (Arnimallee 22, Dahlem)

    Please note: The return time to FU Berlin depends on the pace of the group and the actual duration of the hike.

    Practical advice: Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water and snacks.

Hike from Pfaueninsel to Wannsee

Join a 3-5 km hike from the Pfaueninsel through natural landscapes to Wannsee (on-site payment: 0 EUR).

    Schedule:

    We will meet at 1:30 pm in front of Arnimallee 22 (FU Berlin, Dahlem). From there, we will walk about 20 minutes to the S-Bahn station Botanischer Garten, take the S1 to Wannsee (every 10 minutes), and continue by bus 218 (departure 14:50, only once every hour) to the Pfaueninsel stop. From there, we will enjoy a relaxed walk through the surrounding nature on the mainland, with nice views to Pfaueninsel and the river Havel, and heading back to the S-Bahn station Wannsee. Finally, we will return by S1 to Botanischer Garten and walk back to Arnimallee 22.

Neue Nationalgalerie: Extreme Tension

Experience powerful works at the “Extreme Tension. Collection of the Nationalgalerie 1945 – 2000” exhibition in a building designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe  (on-site payment: 20 EUR / 10 EUR).

Humboldt Forum Asian Art

Immerse yourself in centuries of artistic tradition at the Asian Art collection in the Humboldt Forum (on-site payment: 0 EUR).

    Schedule:

    The guided tour (60 min) at Humboldt Forum is going to begin at 15:30. You are free to choose whether you set out for the museum by yourself or travel along with Jonathan Scherlitzki, starting from the conference venue at
    Arnimallee 22. In the latter case, please gather at the main entrance of the building at 13:55; we are going to leave at
    14:00, heading to the subway station Dahlem-Dorf. You can also purchase a ticket for public transportation there if not already done. We plan to arrive at the subway station Museumsinsel by 15:00. This is where we are going to meet up with the participants who travelled on their own.

    Note that bags and jackets are not allowed inside the museum and have to be kept in lockers during our visit. After the tour ends, we will return to the conference venue.

Bouldering

Join an indoor bouldering session suitable for all experience levels. (on-site payment: ca 18 EUR).

    For the bouldering, we will meet either:

    • at 14:00 in front of the conference building (Arnimallee 22, 14195 Berlin) and take the underground U3 together
    • or you can travel on your own and meet us at 15:00 in front of Boulderklub Kreuzberg (Ohlauer Str. 38, 10999 Berlin).

    We recommend that you wear or bring comfortable sport clothes. Climbing shoes can be borrowed on site.
