Poster prize for Michael Schmuker at BCCN2009 Conference

News from Oct 06, 2009

Michael Schmuker has received a poster prize at the BCCN 2009 Conference, which took place from September 30 to October 2 in Frankfurt am Main. On his poster titled "Dual information coding in parallel olfactory systems through distinct network properties" Michael showed how the distinct odor coding properties in neurons within the honeybee's lateral and medial antenno-cerebral tract (l- and m-ACT) can be brought about by different strength of lateral inhibition. His model makes experimentaly testable predictions, such as that the l- and m-ACT subnetworks should be at least partly segregated. In addition, the model suggests that l-ACT may be more important for learning, because it delivers a more fine-grained representation of the olfactory world. The abstract of the poster will appear in Frontiers in Computational Neuroscience.
