Master’s Thesis
Information and requirements for the Master’s thesis can be found in § 7 of the Examination Regulations (2013).
Keep in mind that the use of the FU Berlin logo and/or seal is not permitted.
Students must register their Master’s thesis with the Examinations Office at least two weeks before the start date which must be approved by the Examination Board. The digital submission of the application form is preferred:
- Master’s thesis registration (internal / external)
If your application has been approved by the Examination Board, you will be informed of the submission date and all other submission formalities by the Examinations Office.
Important: When registering for the Master’s thesis, only authorized supervisors / examiners are admitted, these are usually professors (Prof.) or Privatdozent (PD). The application can only be processed once all signatures have been obtained.
- Confidentiality of your thesis
Your thesis will not be published by the FU Berlin.
If you are writing your thesis externally and it contains confidential information or research results that have not yet been published, please use a blocking note as a cover sheet for your thesis.
- Extension of thesis handling time
If you fall ill during your handling time, please send a scan of your certificate of incapacity for work to the examination office. Your processing time will be extended by the period of sick leave.
If you are prevented from working on your thesis due to circumstances beyond your control (e.g. repair of a device), you can apply for an extension. To do this, send an informal application with a brief explanation, a specific extension period (e.g. "by two weeks"), your signature and the approving signature of your first supervisor.
If you are ill or otherwise prevented from working on your thesis for a longer period of time (usually longer than 50% of the handling time), the examination board will decide how to proceed.
- Submission of the Master’s thesis and re-registration for the next semester
The Master’s thesis must be submitted by e-mail to pruefungsbuero@chemie.fu-berlin.de as a PDF file by the day you have been notified as the “latest deadline” (by midnight). The PDF file must contain the text in machine-readable form, not just graphically, and must not have any rights restrictions. Please remember to include the handwritten and signed Declaration of Independence. Note that the FU Berlin logo or seal must not be used. The submission does not automatically lead to deregistration!
If you are working on your thesis across semesters and the submission falls in the next semester, re-registration is NOT REQUIRED. If you want to spend time in other rooms (e.g. a laboratory) for your Master’s thesis in the next semester or register for and complete further modules, please re-register, as your student status is important here. If this is not the case, you can also submit your thesis de-registered. It is up to you to decide whether to re-register or de-register. You can apply for de-registration at the Student Service Center.
