The department’s Offices of Academic Affairs provide study advisory, course of study advising, and subject advising. They act as a contact for maternity leave and compensation for disadvantages, coordinate the distribution of places in courses with limited capacity, and are responsible for curriculum planning as well as the development of study structures and quality in teaching and learning. They also issue study forecasts (e.g., for scholarships or applications for residence permits).
In addition, they advise faculty members and institutes on matters related to the development of study structures and the quality of teaching and learning.
Contacts and further information for students and faculty can be found on the websites of the Offices of Academic Affairs:
The Examinations Offices manage students’ study and examination achievements, assist with crediting, and provide advice. They clarify questions regarding attendances, grades, and credit points in Campus Management, and forward applications to the examination boards as well as registrations for final theses and examinations. They also prepare certificates, study forecasts, transcripts of records, and final documents.
Here you will find contact persons and information provided by the Examinations Offices for students, as well as current office hours and closing times.

The Graduate Center of the Department of Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacy is the central service facility for all those who consider to do a doctorate or are doing their doctorate at the department. Here you will find information on how to start a doctorate and its procedure, further education offers, networking opportunities and advisory services during the doctoral studies as well as information on how to complete your doctorate.
In addition, the Graduate Center offers information and advice for postdoctoral researchers and for supervisors at the department.
The application and administration of teaching assignments are handled somewhat differently across the three institutes of the Department of Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacy (BCP).
Here you will find information for adjunct lecturers as well as details on remuneration for examinations (in German).
Under the headings below, you will find explanations of the application procedures and administrative processes in each institute, along with the relevant contacts and the appropriate forms.
Applications for teaching assignments at the Institute of Biology are submitted as part of the course planning process.
When the course planning documents are circulated (at the beginning of each semester for the following semester), the application deadline for teaching assignments is also announced.
Teaching assignments must be submitted by a faculty member in Biology on behalf of the adjunct lecturer and filed with the Office of Academic Affairs in Biology by the specified deadline.
As part of the approval of the course planning, teaching assignments are decided by the Institute Council (IR) and subsequently administered by the Office of Academic Affairs in Biology.
Payment for teaching assignments is handled by the Budget and Finance Office, Daniela Jäger (see section “Payment of Teaching Assignments”), and must therefore also be requested there.
Applications for teaching assignments at the Institute of Chemistry and Biochemistry are submitted as part of the course planning process.
Teaching assignments must be submitted by a faculty member in Chemistry or Biochemistry on behalf of the adjunct lecturer. In Chemistry, applications are submitted directly to the Managing Director (GD), while in Biochemistry they are forwarded to the GD via Ms. Jäger. This should be done no later than two weeks before the final Institute Council (IR) meeting of the preceding semester.
As part of the approval of the course planning, teaching assignments are decided at the final IR meeting of the preceding semester and are subsequently administered by the Office of Academic Affairs in Chemistry and Biochemistry.
Payment for teaching assignments is handled by the Budget and Finance Office, Daniela Jäger (see section “Payment of Teaching Assignments”), and must therefore also be requested there.
Teaching assignments at the Institute of Pharmacy are granted in coordination with the faculty members of Pharmacy and the Managing Director as part of the course planning process. They are approved at the final Institute Council (IR) meeting of a semester for the following semester and are subsequently administered by Dr. Ursula Brümmer.
Payment for teaching assignments is handled by the Budget and Finance Office, Daniela Jäger (see section “Payment of Teaching Assignments”), and must therefore also be requested there.
All relevant information must be entered separately for each individual course on the application form (in German). This is necessary to ensure that the teaching assignment data can be correctly transferred into the administrative systems. If you wish to apply for multiple courses for one adjunct lecturer, an additional form for further courses is available.
Application Form (Additional form)
For initial applications for an adjunct lecturer, and whenever personal data changes, a personnel questionnaire (in German) must be submitted together with the application for a teaching assignment.
Nach Durchführung des Lehrauftrages ist durch den(/die Lehrbauftragte*n die Auszahlung zu beantragen. Die Durchführung der Lehre muss von dem / der antragstellenden Hochschullehrer*in bestätigt werden.
After the teaching assignment has been completed, the adjunct lecturer must submit a payment request. The completion of the teaching must be confirmed by the faculty member who submitted the application.
Dear Adjunct Lecturers,
For the payment of your teaching assignment remuneration, it is essential that the form “Payment Request for Teaching Assignment Remuneration” (in German) is completed in full.
Please note in particular:
Dr. Zacher, Mr. Kleier, and Dr. Brümmer may, if necessary, forward fully completed forms directly to Ms. Jäger. Otherwise, please send the completed form to Ms. Jäger yourself.
If you have any questions, please also contact Ms. Jäger.
The Erasmus+ study program gives students the opportunity to spend one semester or a full academic year at a partner university in another European country while earning credits that can be transferred to Freie Universität Berlin.
The department maintains partnerships with universities across Europe, offers subject-specific information sessions each year, advises students on planning their Erasmus experience, and supports incoming Erasmus students from partner institutions.
For more information, please visit the department’s Erasmus program webpages.
Throughout the course of your studies you will continuously encounter new challenges. At first, there are new working techniques, self-organized studying and a new surrounding to be managed; maybe a new city and financial aspects.
As you approach the end of your undergraduate studies, the focus shifts to the thesis: Where do I start? How long will it take? How do I find a supervisor?
Getting closer to their master’s degree, many students are uncertain whether they should apply for a PhD position right away or enter the job market.
For each of these phases in your student-life-cycle, the Department of Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacy offers support via mentoring. Students from higher semesters and PhD candidates offer advice and answer questions, either individually or in group meetings.
