Activities & Teaching

Overview

Alongside our conventional teaching (see our Master’s course below), the team is actively involved in a range of training and outreach activities. We participate in events run by the BioupraMol core facility, such as their Summer Schools, and deliver courses for schoolgirls through initiatives like SommerUNI and the "NATürlich" program. We also provide individual, hands‑on training in specialized methods and techniques tailored to researchers’ needs. In collaboration with the OM BioLabS core unit and BioSupraMol Dr. Yannic Kerkhoff has developed Fiji/ImageJ image analysis tutorials available for everyone.

Within the group we run a seminar series that reviews and discusses the latest work on cell–nanoparticle interactions, offering a forum for critical discussion, method exchange and the development of collaborative projects. In addition, we maintain collaborations with other research groups both within the department and beyond, and we work closely with imaging facilities across Berlin, including MPI MolGen, Humboldt University (HU), Charité AMBIO and FMP in Buch. We also involved in the DFG funded  CRC 1449 DYNAMIC HYDROGELS AT BIOINTERFACES and the Canadian-German GRK 2662 "CHARGING INTO THE FUTURE"

Dr. Katharina Achazi und Dr. Jan Schmoranzer zeigen uns ihre Arbeitsplätze: Hochmoderne Gerätezentren, an denen Forschende sich die komplexe Geräte teilen. Das „BioSupraMol“ an der Freien Universität und die „Advanced Medical BioImaging Core Facility“ an der Charité Berlin zeigen welche Bedeutung solche Gerätezentren für aktuelle Forschung haben.

BioSupraMol courses & summer schooles

The core facility BioSupraMol offers a broad range of regular courses covering commonly used measuring methods. Moreover, since 2013 the so-called Summer Schools are organized, a regular series of lectures and practical demonstrations covering various key topics of analysis.

Courses

  • Advanced light microscopy and cell-based assays in biomedical research and neuroscience (Seminar/Lab Course)
    Katharina Achazi, Marta Maglione
    (in total 4 SWS, VLVZ no.: 216624 a/b). This block course is intended for students with an interest in biomedical and neurobiological issues relevant to research. In particular, the course introduces advanced light microscopy and other cell-based biochemical and molecular biological as well as analytical methods. In the first part of the methods course, the analysis of cells and cellular processes as well as basics for the cultivation of cells, sterile work, preparation of cells and tissues including fixation methods, staining techniques and dyes especially fluorescent dyes as well as safety relevant aspects when handling biological samples are covered theoretically and practically. The second part covers theoretical and practical aspects of various light microscopic methods including fluorescence, confocal and STED microscopy as well as imaging and image evaluation, digital image processing and image analysis as well as the design, function and handling of light microscopes.

  • Note: 
    For Chemistry students there are 2 places each for chemistry students. Places will be allocated online via the WebApp.
    For Biochemistry students there are 4 places each for chemistry students. Places will be allocated online via the link on the summary of the available methods course modules on the information page for enrolled master students.
