We are happy to welcome Antoine Franc, who just started his PhD in our group on "Novel vesicles and thermoresponsive nano/micro gels as components of artificial cells via micromixer technology". Antoine graduated from Pierre-and-Marie-Curie University (UPMC) and Chimie ParisTech, Paris, France.
What a great opportunity to have been invited as speaker for the 11th Young Scientists‘ Workshop of the Fraunhofer ICT-IMM in Mainz! A big thanks to Michael Maskos and the three PhD students organizing it: Abdulkader, Helen and Jonas. As usual a very intense and rewarding workshop about various aspects of chemistry and microfluidics combined.

It was a pleasure and a privilege to attend this week the Bioorganik 2017 – 26th Symposium "Bioorganic Chemistry" for young researchers. Thanks to Johannes Teichert and Philipp Heretsch for the great organisation and to all the participants for the friendly atmosphere and the nice scientific talks and discussions.
The first week of September will be pretty busy and will be more of a "spanish week" for me as I will attend the 31st conference of The European Colloid and Interface Society (ECIS 2017) in Madrid presenting a poster about our latest work on polyacrylamide-based homo- and copolymers as UCST polymers. Just after I will participate to the 6th Annual workshop on biomaterials and their interactions with biological and model membranes 2017 in Altafulla as invited speaker for presenting the topic of self-assembled vesicles from Janus dendrimers via microfluidics. I am really excited about these two events!
I recently attended the 10th International Dendrimer Symposium (IDS10) in Weihai, China, where I presented some of our work on Janus dendrimers and their self-assembly. It was a really interesting conference, I had the opportunity to meet brilliant former coworkers and people in the field of dendrimer synthesis and of course to get a taste of chinese food and culture.
After his bachelor thesis, Daniel is back in our group for an internship of three months. We are really glad to have him back! especially that he´s working on a topic soon to be published...
Our first review article on the topic of vesicles has just been published online "Vesicles from amphiphilic dumbbells and Janus dendrimers: Bioinspired self-assembled structures for biomedical applications" in the journal Polymers (invited review in special issue "Bio-inspired and Bio-based Polymers").
I have the pleasure to have been invited to be guest editor of a special issue about "Temperature-Responsive Polymers" in the journal Materials. We are looking for contributions to this special issue so do not hesitate to contact me if you are interested. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are welcome.The submission deadline is 30 April 2018.
I am currently attending the European Polymer Federation Congress 2017 (EPF 2017) in Lyon, France, which has this year as main topic "From last trends in polymer science to cutting-edge industrial innovations". This is so far an exciting conference and a great meeting point for academia and industry! I will give an oral presentation tomorrow about "Functional thermoresponsive polymers based on 2,6-diaminopyridine with tunable UCST behavior" and hope to foster with it further scientific exchange.
Last week was a very busy week in Mainz! Asad and I attended the symposium on the occasion of Prof. Axel H. E. Müller´s 70th birthday " From macromolecular engineering to multicompartment colloids and nanostructured materials", where we could attend the talks of renowned speakers. We also attended the CECAM workshop about soft smart responsive materials, where we presented the latest results of the group about the UCST thermoresponsive behaviour of acrylamide-based polymers.
Daniel has succesfully defended his bachelor thesis yesterday entitled: Hybrid Anorganisch/Organisch Blockcopolymeren via RAFT-Polymerisation und Sol-Gel Glas Funktionalisierung. Congratulations Daniel, we hope to have you again soon in the group for an internship.
Our work on a new thermoresponsive polymer based on a supramolecular motif presenting a UCST type behaviour in water/alcohol mixtures has just been accepted for publication in Polymer Chemistry. We are really excited about this topic, which represents a new line of research for the group!
The work in cooperation with the group of Andreas Taubert (University of Potsdam) based on our first dendritic amphiphile entitled "A dendritic amphiphile for efficient control of biomimetic calcium phosphate mineralization" has just been published online in Macromolecular Bioscience. Congratulations to Soraya and thanks to Doreen, Andreas and all the cooperation partners for this nice work!
Sebastian C. will attend the conference "6. Berliner Chemie Symposium (BCS)", which will take place in Berlin on April 6th. He will present his work as poster contribution: "Synthesis of hybrid inorganic/organic homopolymers via ATRP and RAFT: A practical comparison". We hope that it will lead to a fruitful exchange with other PhD students in chemistry!
The DPG (German Physical Society) Frühjahrstagung (Spring Meeting) of the Condensed Matter Section (SKM) starts already in two days in Dresden (19-24.03.2017)! It is the first time that we will present our work in front of a physicists audience and we are looking forward to their feedback. I will present two posters about UCST-type polymers in the Division Chemical and Polymer Physics: "Temperature sensitive aggregation behavior of poly(acrylamide-co-acrylonitrile) in water" and "Functional polymer based on 2,6-diaminopridine with tunable UCST behaviour in water/alcohol mixture".
Our second article on the topic of UCST-type polymers "Dielectric analysis of the Upper-Critical-Solution-Temperature behaviour of a poly(acrylamide-co-acrylonitrile) copolymer system in water" is now published online in Soft Matter. Congratulations to Asad for this very nice work and thanks for a nice collaboration to Andreas Schönhals!
We are currently attending the 5th International Conference on Multifunctional, Hybrid and Nanomaterials in Lisbon Portugal (06-10.03.2017). I will give a talk about "Bioinpisred hybrid organic-inorganic copolymers" (Sebastian C. & Sebastian H.´s topic) and Asad will present two posters about "Switching of nanoparticles' fluorescence between "ON" and "OFF" states by a thermoresponsive polymeric layer" and his most recent work on UCST-type copolymers "Functional polymer based on 2,6-diaminopridine with tunable UCST behaviour in water/alcohol mixture".
Our first article on the topic of UCST-type polymers "Phase transition and aggregation behaviour of an UCST-type copolymer poly(acrylamide-co-acrylonitrile) in water: Effect of acrylonitrile content, concentration in solution, copolymer chain length and presence of electrolyte" has been recently published in Soft Matter and is now in open access. Congratulations to Asad for this very nice work!
We are happy to welcome Daniel Braatz, Bachelor student in Chemistry at FU Berlin, who just started his Bachelor Thesis in our group on "Hybrid organic-inorganic copolymers via RAFT polymerization" as a continuation of Jan´s previous work.
Most of the group members, namely Asad, Sebastian C., Sebastian H. and myself attended the conference "Makromolekulares Kolloquium 2017" in Freiburg: 15-17.02.2017. The focus of this year´s conference was "Engineering functional macromolecular interfaces". Asad presented his work in the form of a poster contribution entitled "Thermoresponsive layer switches "On" and "Off" fluorescence in a core/shell/shell nanoparticle".
Thanks to the all team for this great team day spent at the "Escape game" "Big Bang theory"!
After having done his "advanced lab" in our group, Vahid, Master Student in the Master of Polymer Science program between FU / HU / TU Berlin / Uni Potsdam, will join our team again to conduct his master thesis on "Novel UCST-type copolymers based on 2,6-diaminopyridine".
