On July 9, researchers from across Germany gathered at the Freie Universität Berlin for the inaugural meeting of a new Study Group on Molecular Immunology, coordinated by Prof. Christian Freund. The group, established under the German Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (GBM), brings together scientists working at the interface between molecular and cellular immunology.

The founding discussion centered on three questions: What makes this group distinct within the broader biochemistry community? How broad or focused should its scientific scope be? And what should its meetings actually look like?

The initiators of the study group Molecular Immunology set themselves the goal of better linking an understanding of molecular and cellular processes with the complex organismic and medical issues in this rapidly developing field of science. The group's identity settled on a spirit of openness, seeing overlap with neighboring fields as a chance for exchange.

The aim is to stay broad enough to welcome researchers from across biochemistry and immunology, while still giving the group a clear scientific profile. Topics span the co-evolution of viruses with the immune system, the determination of T-cell antigens using modern mass spectrometry methods, and the investigation and manipulation of signaling pathways originating from membrane-bound receptors of the immune system.

For its meetings, the group plans to build a recurring, recognizable rhythm, anchored by a biennial in-person gathering and complemented by lighter online formats, with a strong emphasis on involving early-career researchers.

This kick-off meeting was just the beginning. Next steps include a perspective piece for BIOspektrum and the group's first full in-person meeting. We look forward to growing this community and to seeing where these conversations lead.
