Prof. Dr. Matthias Rillig has been elected as a Fellow of the Ecological Society of America (ESA). The biology professor at the Freie Universität Berlin is honored for his outstanding contributions in the field of plant ecology and for his discoveries on ecosystem processes. He was also honored for his support of international cooperations as well as for the support of young scientists. ESA is a society of ecologists founded in 1915 in the USA and Canada. As part of the Fellows Program, which was founded in 2012, on the basis of their scientific achievements in the field of ecology individuals are elected for life.
Prof. Dr. Matthias Rillig, born in 1968, studied at the Universities of Kaiserslautern and Edinburgh, received his doctorate in 1997 from the University of California at Davis and was a research associate at the Carnegie Institution for Science (then Carnegie Institution of Washington), Stanford, USA. From 1999 to 2007, Matthias Rillig worked as a professor at the University of Montana. Since 2007 he has been researching and teaching as a professor of plant ecology at the Free University of Berlin. Young scientists from more than 20 countries are currently working in his laboratory. Rillig is director of the Berlin-Brandenburg Institute for Biodiversity Research and elected member of the German Biodiversity Research Center (iDiv). More recently, Matthias Rillig has presented papers on microplastic in soil and in terrestrial ecosystems.
