The Tagesspiegel has briefly reported about our recent publication in Nature Chemistry regarding the investigations of β-sheet formation in peptide amyloid assemblies. These peptides play a crucial role in a variety of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. They can undergo a spontaneous transition from a soluble, often partially folded form, into insoluble amyloid fibrils. The exact assembly mechanism of such fibrils and the influence on the disease is still not fully understood. In our recent investigation we showed that already small peptide oligomers can contain a significant amount of β-sheet, the characteristic secondary structure motif found in fully assembled fibrils.
